The article focuses on television programs and documentaries. Clive James' first major foray onto the American screen, "Fame in the Twentieth Century," the eight-hour documentary think-piece that dominated PBS listings over the summer, is a depressing waste of subject and author. Three years in the making, Fame was a collaborative production. Home Box Office telecasts Forest Whitaker's hour-and-a-half movie "Strapped." Whitaker brings to directing the same quiet self-confidence he has demonstrated as an actor (his credits include the British soldier in The Crying Game.)
