Abstract

Watching Rights

Neier, Aryeh | October 4, 1993 issue

The article focuses on the human rights enjoyed now-a-days. Once upon a time some partisans of Communist governments contended that their system was superior because it guaranteed the right to be fed and housed decently, which mattered more than freedom of speech and the press. Although the argument is now seldom heard from that quarter, it is being pressed insistently these days, by spokespersons for authoritarian East Asian governments that have developed thriving market economies. Another characteristic that the current argument shares with its antecedent is a tendency to express scorn for the West.
