The article presents information about the book "Volunteer Slavery: My Authentic Negro Experience," by Jill Nelson. The book is hot. Nelson takes no prisoners, and a lot of insiders are burned. But Nelson can't simply be dismissed as a glorified gossip, or a cranky, sore loser spitting out sour grapes. Too much of what she says hits home. Just as Lunch not only gives good gossip but also reveals the bizarre facts of how movies get made, so Slavery gives insight about how influential big-city dailies are run and how stories get assigned, edited, killed and played.
