The article comments on the novel "Generation X." The novel Generation X, stocked with young slacken stuck in various McJobs in Palm Springs, California, has become the unofficial guide to this twentysomething Schadenfreude. The name for this syndrome, usefully provided by the author Douglas Coupland, sniglet-master of the new Zeilgeist, is successophobia. Some monitors of the Zeilgeist look upon this and detect fertile ground for generational warfare. What begins as a call to generational arms turns out to be some intergenerational advice, as, behind the rhetoric, the sturdy symmetries of class reassert themselves from one era to the next.
