The article comments on a manuscript published in the 1993 issue of the journal "The National Interest." The subject is the death of communism, and almost all the contributors are in danger of choking on their own self-regard. As the cold war polarities collapse, those people who opposed the cold war as a thing in itself can see with grimness but not satisfaction the emergence in the East of the sort of politics that the police intellectuals and the intellectual police of Encounter and Commentary spent some time inculcating.
