This article focuses on the entry of Christopher Patten, Governor of Hong Kong into politics. During his political boyhood, he came to the U.S. on a traveling scholarship from Oxford and worked briefly on the first mayoral campaign of John Lindsay in New York. This decided him on a career in politics. A close friend asked if he had yet decided which party to adorn. Patten replied breezily that he had already written to the head quarter of both the Labor and Conservative parties, and would accept whichever made him the better offer.
