This article reports that David Gergen, advisor to the U.S. President has been brought to the rescue. After the official announcement, Gergen busily phoned White House staff and reporters from a West Wing office and told all that he will not be a mere communications director. His title is counselor to the President. He will be planning long range policy. And there he was on television, spouting his thoughts on the boss's budget: too many taxes; too few cuts. That sends a clear message to the Democrats in the U.S. Congress who voted for the budget package and should puzzle the public.
