The article discusses the literary work by Chicano poets and editors. The current success of writers like Sandra Cisneros, Oscar Hijuelos and Richard Rodriguez crosses beyond arguments over bilingualism, cultural identity and the direction of American arts and letters. The dramatic beginnings of Chicano literature in the sixties and the social and political gains of Mexican-Americans in the past two decades have helped push Chicano authors to the forefront. More than any other genre, Chicano fiction is responsible for multiculturalism's beginning to lose its polarizing effect. The appeal of writers like Rudolfo Anaya and Gary Soto is familiar.
