The article focuses on various sociopolitical issues, as of May 1993. At the moment, one of the most formidable impediments to political reform in the U.S. is the women's bloc in Congress. Those who claim to represent change are standing in the way for the most traditional of reasons: to help a campaign contributor. The villain is EMILY's List, a political action committee that supports female candidates. The U.N. Truth Commission's report has confirmed that the U.S. backed military of El Salvador and government-linked death squads slaughtered tens of thousands of Salvadorans in the 1980s.
