The article focuses on various sociopolitical issues, as of May 1993. In 1972, the year in which the document surfacing in Moscow claims Hanoi was holding 1,205 U.S. prisoners of war, the U.S. was bombing the southern part of North Vietnam, vast swaths of South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Despite being the subject of a segment of ABC's "World News Tonight," and also front-page material in the West Coast press, the spy scandal engulfing the Anti-Defamation League has been delicately ignored by many East Coast papers. Only papers in the South have made much of the recent disclosure of a spy network commencing in 1917 and functioning on a scale vaster by far than the ADL's operation.
