The article focuses on the book "The Invisible Epidemic: The Story of Women and AIDS," by Gena Corea. Corea structures her account of women and AIDS on many individual stories that allow people to experience, up close, the "invisible epidemic," providing a year-by-year account of events that went unrecorded by the media and unregistered in the popular imagination. There is the poverty lawyer, Terry McGovern, who sees HIV-infected women being denied disability benefits routinely available to men because their symptoms are not included in the official Centers for Disease Control definition of AIDS.
