The article focuses on the peace process in El Salvador. Guerrilla leader Roberto Canas and Defense Minister Rene Emilio Ponce hovering near a tray of shrimp chilled by an eagle-shaped ice sculpture. More guerrillas and military officials mingle over caviar and smoked salmon. The party room is a Supreme Court chamber, the same one that sixteen months before held the trial of nine soldiers for the November 1989 murder of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter. This reception marked the close of a two-day conference on January 12-13 in San Salvador that gathered all the sides in the peace process to talk about how to live together in the modern world.
