The article focuses on Anthony Thomas, who was a decade ago an agent of Big Brother. The experience still haunts him--especially now, as the national quarrel over homosexuals and the military rolls on. In 1983 Thomas, a photographer, worked for the Army at Fort Clayton in Panama City. One day he was approached by Army intelligence. The spies had picked up gossip that one of the clerks in the audiovisual unit was a lesbian. They were especially anxious because she handled classified materials. The clerk was another friend of Thomas, and the two frequently dined or drank together.
