The article focuses on the book "The Jazz Scene," by Eric Hobsbawm. Hobsbawm is an academic who got bitten by the jazz bug early and wound up covering the stuff first for the periodical New Statesman, then for The New York Review of Books. The book "The Jazz Scene" was first published in Great Britain in 1959; this first U.S. edition also includes Hobsbawm's essays from both journals. They update some of Hobsbawm's concerns, like the music's evolution and vitality. Hobsbawm is talking about what he calls true jazz, a category that in his mind, as in the minds of most serious jazz critics, is smaller than the record store bins with that label.
