Cleaving his way through the "American Reunion" concert crowd on the Mall, the author suddenly caught the unmistakable strain of a melody of American folk-rock singer Bob Dylan. But it was not any song, the author recognized and the surrounding throng seemed unsure, and Dylan was not on the program. Yet half an hour later the author found that for no reason, was replaying "Chimes of Freedom," an anthem the author had not thought of in decades. Among the friendly, great-looking, multiracial rainbow of the crowd, a newly invented U.S. was conceivably coming into its own and resounding to the lost harmonies of better days.
