The article presents a critical examination of the book 'Rebellion in the Backlands," by Euclides da Cunha. His 500-page epic treatise, published in 1902, rendered into rich English prose by Samuel Putnam, kept in print in the U.S. by the University of Chicago Press since 1944 and is today a classic of South American literature. Although the book reads like a novel hurled along by the energy of vigorous protagonists and runaway events, Cunha also manages to convey, in the manner of the great explorer-writers of the nineteenth century, an enormous amount about the environment of the sertöes, or backlands, while also portraying in depth the human inhabitants,.
