At a press luncheon held by the Philadelphia Museum of Art to celebrate the opening of an exhibition of Martin Puryear, widely esteemed as among foremost sculptors, the young curator in charge of installing the eccentric and often unwieldy pieces told of an instructive interchange with the artist. Puryear had deflected an intended compliment, which spoke of his consummate craftsmanship: by saying that his craft was merely adequate to the realization of the work at hand. It is almost as if the sculptors of today still smart from the Renaissance controversies as to which stands higher, sculpture or painting, when the implication was that poetry and philosophy perhaps stood highest in the scheme of human endeavors, as being the most contemplative.
