In London, where sketches of author Charles Dickens are hung in restaurants and where many underground passengers carry paper editions of books by great writers, Tony Harrison is considered the most exciting poet-playwright around. His verse drama "Square Rounds" has been playing to large audiences since early October at the Royal National Theatre, within the South Bank's cultural center. The play boldly reconciles the high art of verse drama with common language and immediate concerns. The play, though, is his most savage work to date.
