The Right Word

This article critically appraises the book "Roget's International Thesaurus," 5th ed., edited by Robert Chapman. Chapman inserted physics between space and matter, and sensation between matter and intellect. For those given to pursuing a string to its ragged end, those curious to know what kindred meanings a word might evoke, as well as those whose efforts to gain admittance through the index have proved unavailing, the front door leads to a mansion of countless chambers. The problem of lists permeates the fifth edition. While the roster of manias is every bit as formidable as that of phobias, other lists do not appear to aspire to similar comprehensiveness; their purpose is unclear.
