Let's Have Real Campaign Reform

Whatever the outcome of the November elections, the 1992 campaign has already highlighted the need for radical structural change in the way political leaders are elected. Existing proposals for campaign reform tinker with the mechanics of election financing without dealing with its most basic and easily identifiable flaw: the corrupting influence that private money has over the political process. Individual campaign contributors provide Congressional candidates with almost twice as much money as do political action committees. The campaign finance reform bill passed this year by the Congress also falls short.
