The article presents several news briefs that appeared in various journals. According to a crucial essay in this month's Harper's Magazine by journalist Walter Russell Mead who gets into the grit of both NAFTA and GATT (the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) and concludes that the George Bush's version of free trade embedded in these accords will amount to nothing less than a profound circumvention of the constitutional system of checks and balances. After eighteen months, there is at last a good account of the behavior of the Pentagon and the press in the Gulf War. Writing in the Summer issue of World Policy Journal, journalist Marie Gottschalk is careful not to lay the blame for the abysmal coverage exclusively or even primarily on military censorship.
