The article presents information on the rebellion in upper Egypt. If an uprising against the government of President Hosni Mubarak were to take place, the common wisdom says, it would begin right in Asyut, the capital of Islamic fundamentalism in Egypt. This city of 750,000 lies a half-clay's drive south of Cairo along the Nile, amid verdant wheat fields and crumbling Pharaonic temples. Much of the blame for this turmoil must reside with the government, whose heavy-handedness in crushing the Islamic opposition is winning new enemy recruits violently opposed to the established order-with each passing day.
