The article discusses the life history of a great artist, Eva Hesse and her paintings. She came up in the art world at a time when the highest compliment a woman artist could be paid was that she painted like a man, but she knew considerable triumph in the compressed few years between the time she found herself as an artist and her death. Her art is intelligent, surprising, vibrant and funny. For those who love her art, the University Art Gallery at Yale must be a point of pilgrimage before "Eva Hesse: A Retrospective" comes down on July 31-although there is to be a second venue, from October 15 until January 10, 1993, at the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington.
