The article presents information about cement cartels in the European countries. In the past twenty years the multinational cement makers have used revenues to tighten their grip on the worldwide cement industry by buying smaller cement producers, ready-mix concrete makers and stone quarries. The cement cartel has evolved into one of the most sophisticated operations in Europe. But now it is imperiled by an antitrust probe by the European Commission, the body charged with enforcing antitrust laws among the twelve Common Market countries. Some of the primary suspects are: Lafarge Coppée and Ciments Français, France; Holderbank Financière Glans Ltd., Switzerland and Italcimenti, Italy.
