This article critically appraises the book "Who Will Tell the People: The Betrayal of American Democracy," by William Greider. This book spells out where all this has left the United States--as an economy, as a culture and as a political idea about the promise of democracy. In the new political economy of the United States this "culture of lawlessness" not only pays, it is so massively profitable that it can finance both political parties and the elected officials who make it possible. Beyond this Greider shows how the new political order defends as well as sustains congenial politicians.
