The article presents information on practical politics. The victory of Yitzhak Rabin's Labor Party in the June 23 Israeli elections opens the path to peace in the Middle East, though the way is tortuous and some hard traveling lies ahead. Friends of free speech can take cautious cheer from the Supreme Court's unanimous ruling on June 22 throwing out a St. Paul law prohibiting hate symbols. In the past six months a presidential candidate, Patrick Buchanan, pick up 20 to 40 percent of the Republican vote while viciously swiping at "Tongues Untied," Marion B. Riggs's film about the lives of black gay men.
