The article presents information related to several books. The book "Vested Interests: Cross-Dressing and Cultural Anxiety," by Marjorie Garber describes several aspects of cross-dressing and gender-crossing permeate American culture. According to the International Foundation for Gender Education, 6 percent of the U.S. population are cross-dressers and 1 percent are transsexuals. The other book "Body Guards: The Cultural Politics of Gender Ambiguity," edited by Julia Epstein and Kristina Straub delves more deeply into the politics. This book is more precisely interested in the politics of gender questions; and the essays it contains are, as a rule, more specifically concerned with gender-related issues than with cross-dressing per se.
