This article focuses on the book "Feminism Without Illusions: A Critique of Individualism," by Elizabeth Fox-Genovese. The book is a thorough-going attempt to reconcile contemporary feminism with traditional conservative thought, and is based on the trademark premise of her work and that of her husband, Marxist historian Eugene Genovese. It is unclear whether Elizabeth Fox-Genovese means to do feminism a service or a disservice in Feminism Without Illusions: A Critique of Individualism. Until feminism purges itself of its individualist premises, it will be unable either to develop a critique of contemporary society or to envision a secure and equal place for women in it.
