Why International Law Matters

The article focuses on issues related to the credibility of the United Nations (UN) to represent the interests of the people around the world. There remains the possibility that the diplomatic muscle of the U.S. will intimidate the Security Council into ignoring its constitutional responsibilities under the Charter, and either mandate an unwarranted war or refuse to place obstacles in the way of the U.S. government's stated intentions. Such a posture would weaken the credibility of the UN as representing the best interests of the people on issues of peace and security, and would further undermine the role of international law.
