The article discusses the socio-political condition of East Germany after unification with the West. The country was practicing socialism but later it tried combining the formal freedoms and market advantages of West Germany with the equality and stated social goals of the East. After unification the termination of the pre-existing rights of every professor in every institution of higher education in East Germany, and the layoff of thousands of researchers in the academies, are significant parts of that process of suppression. The Contract of Unification between East and West Germany, effective from October 3, 1990, threw social reform made by German Democratic Republic efforts into disarray.
