The article focuses on the book "Make No Law: The Sullivan Case and the First Amendment," by Anthony Lewis. Free speech and the Constitution are the subjects of Anthony Lewis's fine book "Make No Law," which recounts the dramatic events that led up to New York Times versus Sullivan, the precedent-setting 1964 Supreme Court case that established the law of libel in its present form. Lewis comes to his subject with impressive credentials. He covered the Sullivan case for the Times and spent years reporting on the Supreme Court. He is also the author of "Gideon's Trumpet," a huge best seller about another important constitutional issue, the right of a defendant to legal counsel in court.
