Next to a folder emblazoned with the insignia of the Central Intelligence Agency and containing briefing material on the Persian Gulf War rests a dog-eared copy of Tikkun, a magazine written mostly by and for Jewish-American leftists. Behind the mess the freshman Senator from Minnesota is on the phone talking to a representative from his home state about a regulatory matter concerning a company based there. Now Senator Paul Wellstone is trying to find a niche — but not too comfortable a place — in the most exclusive political club in the land.
