A year ago, Cable News Network (CNN) meant nothing to Hungarians; it sounded like a new brand of detergent. Now everybody knows it's the "world's news leader." Hungary's newly organized private cable companies started broadcasting CNN on the third day of the Persian Gulf War, at the best possible time. The bankrupt Hungarian economy does not have much of a choice. Most national film studios, publishers and theaters will either be bought up by foreign companies or will disappear altogether. Freedom also means freedom to suffer financial fiasco. The worst financial fiasco is that of the state, and it cannot afford to foot the bill for culture.
