The article presents information on the book "Gentleman Rebel: The Memoirs of H. Stuart Hughes." Actually, Hughes's two incarnations have tugged him back and forth since the 1930s, and the resulting tug of war is exactly what gives his autobiography its fascination. Throughout the first phase of the cold war, Hughes tried to steer clear of a black hats or white hats interpretation. The Rebel gave way intermittently to the Gentleman, caught in a "reductio ad absurdum of simultaneous respectability and disrepute."
