The article focuses on two books "The Drowned River," by Thomas Lux and "Going Back to the River," by Marilyn Hacker. Compassion allows the mind to tender the weight and feel of different lives, finding us vulnerable together. Lux's fifth full collection of poems, "The Drowned River," tells the story and struggle of plain and magnificent humans. Lux describes us as "drowned" in the full tilt of living, in the flood of history and in our own short breath relative to time's long view. The book, written without sections, turns a passionate insistence and questioning on the reader.
