The author offers observation on the racism and class bias in the U.S. She explains an incident wherein U.S. National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice supposedly got angry at a jewelry store salesperson who showed her only the costume jewelry. According to writer Nicholas Lemann, Rice responds to an insult based on her membership in a group by angrily proclaiming her personal superiority to the deliverer of the insult. For the author, the incident demonstrated less personal achievement than a complex and unconscious battle between race and class.
