In this article, the author focuses on several literary works of author R.H. Blyth, specially, "Blyth's Zen in English Literature and Oriental Classics," published by Hokuseido Press. Some other books of Blyth considered here are: the five-volume "Zen and Zen Classics," the four-volume "Haiku," and the two-volume "A History of Haiku." According to the author, among several book about Zen and about its relationship to literature and art and finance and sex and self-esteem, Blyth's sensibility has little to do with New Age yearnings for self-improvement or non-challenging enlightenment, or with romantic idealizations of the exotic East or, for that matter, with the notion that Zen Buddhism is nice or sweet or friendly.
