This article focuses on the book "The Making of the President 1789: The Unauthorized Campaign Biography," by Marvin Kitman. It is a matter of public record, that Kitman, a registered Republican, ran in the Republican primary, and his main opponent was Senator Barry Goldwater. He stood squarely on the 1864 Republican platform, which called for freeing the slaves and bringing the South back into the Union. This radical civil rights stance cost him the white vote in the South, not to mention the rest of the country. However, Kitman got off to a good start in the New Hampshire primary, garnering 638 votes. In "The Making of the Prefident 1789," Kitman confesses, "after my bitter defeat, I returned to my practice as a writer. But I would never be the same. Once you run for president all other jobs seem second best."
