The article critically examines the book "Nelson Algren: A Life on the Wild Side," by Bettina Drew. Nelson Algren was born in 1909 in Chicago, Illinois. He wandered south and west after college, living in the world of his first novel "Somebody in Boots." Algren was an educated with literary friends in the John Reeds Club and a book contract from Vanguard Press. He wrote the best American novel about drug addiction, but the only drugs he used were alcohol and marijuana. He collected everything he saw and heard, all the events his senses could entice from the world, and rearranged them into fiction.
