The article critically examines three books on representation of women in filmmaking. These books are "Visual and Other Pleasures," by Laura Mulvey; "Feminism and Film Theory," edited by Constance Penley; and "The Future of an Illusion: Film, Feminism, and Psychoanalysis," by Constance Penley. Feminists' questioning of how cultural institutions exclude women as producers and confine on-screen women within highly delimited standards of femininity bears directly on beliefs about women. Feminists also recognize that cinema is a particularly powerful cultural arbiter that must be reckoned with and reinvented in ways that contest that power.
