The article presents a letter from a fictitious character "Y" on behalf of George Kennan whose pseudonym is "X" regarding an issue of Daedalus. Kennan clearly created the idea of containment in his foreign affairs article, arguing that an expansionist Soviet Union threatened the security of the West. The fact that most of the Western media has for some time been speculating obsessively about the prospects for Gorbachev's downfall is no extenuation. The press has form time immemorial focused on who's up and who's down in Moscow, Russia, as a way of diverting attention from the real issue of the political, social and economic forces at play.
