A few weeks ago, The New Republic marked its 75th anniversary in the U.S. In 1990, The Nation celebrates its 125th. Ideologically and politically, there has been very little excuse for two separate publications. The memorandum went on to list the cogent editorial and publishing arguments for consolidating these two magazines. They proposed a relatively simple business plan, to merge The Nation's 40,000 circulation with New Republic's 47,000. Discounting their estimated overlap in subscribers, they projected a starting circulation of 75,000 for the merged magazine.
