The article focuses on a promise released by owners of the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in the United States not to discriminate against gay and lesbian employees. In 1991, the company implemented a policy of firing gay employees regardless of performance, which triggered demonstrations and a boycott of its restaurants. In November 2002, company owners and shareholders finally managed to prod Cracker Barrel into adding sexual orientation to the company's nondiscrimination policy. The author emphasized that while this could be considered a victory for the gay and lesbian community, it should strive to wield its economic clout collectively and not individually in order to affect further significant changes in society.
