The article focuses on the case of Iranian reformist Abbas Abdi, who was arrested on November 4, 2002 on charges of espionage. Along with Behrouz Geranpayeh and Hossein Ghazian, Abdi had conducted a poll for the reformist-dominated Iranian Parliament in late 2002 which found that nearly 75% of respondents favored dialogue between Iran and the United States while 46% felt that American policies toward Iran were correct to a certain extent. Abdi and his two fellow detainees were accused of funneling information to foreign intelligence agencies and tampering with data from the poll. The author pointed out that this arrest could push reformists to further aggression against the government and Iranian President Mohammad Khatami.
