Nicaragua's farms were always a favorite target of the contra army. Even small peasant plots have been singled out for attack if they receive fertilizers or other inputs under the Nicaraguan government's land reform program. As a result, food production has slumped until last year's cease-fire, beans and maize tortillas had become increasingly scarce and expensive. The war has also displaced thousands in the countryside, with the Sandinista's in some cases forcibly relocating peasant populations away from areas of contra activity to create free fire zones. Yet, there are more subtle factors than military attacks behind Nicaragua's rural crisis. One is the green revolution that has transformed world agriculture since World War II.
