This article presents information on the book "Loyalties: A Son's Memoir," by Carl Bernstein. It is informed that Carl Bernstein lived the dream of many a "Red-diaper baby." By breaking the Watergate story with Bob Woodward, he brought down a President. At the same time, Bernstein bagged a Pulitzer Prize, turned out a couple of best-selling books, became a celebrity portrayed by Dustin Hoffman in an Oscar-winning movie and gained instant acceptance as a major player in the power-and-status game of the corporate media. To Bernstein, the Watergate story must have represented both vengeance and vindication, for it satisfied impulses that had been in conflict within him since boyhood a rebel's indignation at government by cabal and an outsider's yearning for inclusion in "normal" American society.
