Harvard Chases Biotech Bucks

In September 1989, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts wrote a new chapter in the history of corporate-academic ties when it announced it will raise $30 million in venture capital to form a company to market the biotechnology research of the Harvard Medical School faculty. Other universities have been inviting biotech firms on campus, offering the profits from faculty research in exchange for funds and facilities. But Harvard has gone the next step by forming its own company, Medical Science Partners, and reserving part of the profits for itself.
