The article profiles Minnesota Republican Senator Norm Coleman, successor to the deceased Democratic Senator Paul Wellstone. Coleman was handpicked by U.S. President George W. Bush to run against Wellstone. President Bush will likely depend on Coleman on the Republican agenda in the U.S. Senate. Bush can count on Coleman who aligned himself with the most conservative wing of the Republican Party. This fact was demonstrated in a debate between him and the late Wellstone on issues of abortion. He also made a number of deals that gave public subsidies to private interests.
