The National Writers Union (NWU) recently celebrated its fifth anniversary. There was a good deal to celebrate that its membership, at 2,600, is up 25 percent since last year and more than double the early 1986 figure. The NWU has also signed up more than 200 freelance contributors to "The Village Voice," and is pressing management there for union recognition and more money, union leaders describe the progress thus far as very slow. The union has drafted a Writer's Declaration endorsing these demands.
