Organized labor, beaten into company-union impotence by nearly thirty years of military dictatorship, has emerged with the first few whiffs of democracy as a potent force in South Korea. But reams of statistics proclaiming the nation's economic growth have concealed realities of pay and working conditions for Korean labor. Strikes and other labor actions have increased fivefold this past year, affecting more than 900 plants in the automobile industry, shipbuilding, heavy machinery, electronics and leather and also involving bank workers, taxi drivers and coal miners.
